Superstitions

There are many superstitions in Japan, for example if you beat some dishes with chopsticks, you can’t be there when your parents die. When I was young, my parents often told me such stories. Japanese believes some superstitions caused dangerous things or death, and they became customs. I think they talk about frightening stories intentionally because they want to keep children away from dangerous things. They don't believe it seriously, but it is useful for children to learn manners. I remember that my grandmother told me a story like this; If you play the recorder at night, death will come. Actually, she wanted me to stop it because it was annoying to the neighbors.

  1. Interesting post, Kaho. It definitely seems plausible that superstitions might have their origins in parental attempts to get kids to 'tow the line.'

  2. yes, very interesting! I was often told by my mother that don`t whistle during the night. It might has both meaning, keeping away from death and stopping annoying to my family and neighbors.
